Developed as a submission for the Bishop’s Art Prize 2016, the series was created in response to the notion of the mundane and familiar, transcending overlooked natural form through detailed pencil drawings. Taking inspiration from an extract of Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 5 (‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.’), the drawings aim to highlight aspects of nature that are most unnoticed and seemingly gentle but continue to strive and expand over urban environments. By distorting the familiar through cropping, selective application of tone and eradication of context, the presence of these forms will be left slightly ambiguous to encourage projection of meaning, unique perceptions and to heighten engagement with the act of looking.
